What is Vertical Farming?
Vertical farming represents one of the most significant turning points in agriculture. Plants
are grown indoors, stacking the crops vertically, often in structures with modular systems.
This method maximizes the use of space, which is precious in urban areas, and reduces dependence
on vast agricultural lands, water, and pesticides.
The first concepts of vertical farms date back to the early 1900s and saw their first expression in the drawings of A.B. Walker published in Life Magazine. The term “vertical farming” was coined in 1915 by the American geologist Gilbert Ellis Bailey, but in this case, it refers to a type of agriculture that, instead of exploiting space in height, cultivates in the depths of the earth.
The boom in research erupted in 2008, with the publication of the book “The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century” by Dickson Despommier, a professor of microbiology and public health at Columbia University.
In the early 2000s, the first true Vertical Farms began to emerge in Japan and Southeast Asia, but they were markedly experimental in nature. From 2010, commercial vertical farms began to spread worldwide.
In 2012, it was Singapore’s turn, where SkyGreens was
established, consisting of more than 100 towers, each 9 meters
tall, for the cultivation of vegetables using sunlight and rainwater.
The technology used in vertical farming includes hydroponic,
aeroponic, or aquaponic systems, which allow plants to grow
without soil, using nutrient solutions. Artificial lighting and
climate control are other crucial aspects, enabling year-round
cultivation, regardless of external weather conditions.
